Andy Warhol became a cream pie of contemporary art

Andy Warhol became a "cream pie" of contemporary art. His quote about fifteen minutes of Fame and his portraits "glamourisés" in heated tones are common places of our time. One called the "Pope" of pop art had yet, and today just forgot, an end of life difficult. If the small guy in Pittsburgh was able to find at the end of the 1960s in New York a public, posterity, and money, in the 1980s, he was well otherwise.

It was considered old-fashioned artist that haunted New York nights with his ridiculous wigs, his skin disease, strange diet, his phobias and his frenzied desire to beautiful boys. In his artistic production, it retained especially the profits that it generates bloated production of social portraits...

Visionary art

Two exhibitions revisit the Warhol myth and to make what he deserves: its status as visionary art. Montreal "warhol Live" is a spectacular "show" on the relationship between Andy and music. One of the few topics that had not yet been addressed in his biography. It is a total immersion in the Warhol myth associated to the Velvet Underground. Rock atmosphere, strobe lights, large sofas to make cool poses...

We discover that it is in based on the creation of the contemporary musician John Cage, who practice a repetitive music, comes the idea of images multiplied on the canvas. Monte in him the desire to invent a total work which includes music and images with the Velvet Underground group. In 1965, he meets in a coffee shop, offers to repeat at the Factory and to become their manager. Projection of films simultaneously in the show, aggressive lighting, colorful atmospheres, recruitment of the Nico belle... They present their "media chaos" is music and films under the title "exploding Plastic inevitable" in 1967 on a tour across America.

But Warhol is rather attracted by the musicians and their universe by the music itself. He loves the world of the night, its marginality and its glitter. Naturally, therefore, he starifie them, questions in his magazine "Interview". Warhol like talent and highlights coverage Madonna, Stings, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson. In direct heir to the great artist Marcel Duchamp, he would not be what is called an "artist" but a creator that interferes with the company. As his friend, art historian, John Richardson, is a "recording angel", a recording Angel. He wants to box his life, his century. Thus he keeps all the memories of his daily life: subscription to Opera, received from taxi and other insignificant documents that he stores in "Time Capsules". They are now exposed in Montreal and London as a display of his daily life.

Yard of images

"Andy warhol, other voices, Other Rooms", the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery London sad concrete building, is as its title: pretty confused. It has however one advantage: it shows new films of the life of Warhol. Warhol films his mother playing a star fallen in his kitchen. It will live for 20 years in the basement of the apartment of the great son. He also shows in "drag queen", with Lisa Minnelli or a guided tour of the houses of Hollywood stars. It moves in a yard of moving images. End: last images show the artist before his death in February 1987, a surgical accident.
